Cartier 50's Cocktail 'Edmond Jeager'
This watch doesn’t feature many of the details you might associate with Cartier today. Instead, it is truly a piece of history, reflecting an earlier chapter in the evolution of the brand’s design language. A beautiful example of Cartier’s more delicate approach to watchmaking during the 1950s, crafted in 18 karat yellow gold case with an intricate woven gold bracelet. Simply stunning.
Cartier is mainly known for its Roman numeral dials, but this particular example features a cleaner, more elegant white dial with elongated hour markers. It does, however, retain the iconic blued Epee hands, albeit in a slightly different form than what you might see today. The hour hand, in particular, has a more pronounced sword-like shape.
The dial is absolutely stunning, with its natural patina and signs of ageing preserved, retaining its original character rather than presenting it in an artificially restored condition. We particularly appreciate this aspect, as finding a genuine 1950s example in such untouched condition is becoming increasingly difficult. Creations like these are rarely encountered today, especially when so much of their original character has survived. It is precisely these subtle signs of age that make this example so special.
The bracelet features a woven structure that is rarely seen today. It genuinely reflects the time and craftsmanship that went into creating these kinds of watches. Suitable for a wrist circumference of approximately 17 cm.
We probably haven’t shared the best detail yet, which lies in the French hallmarks on the case and bracelet. The distinctive eagle’s head punch confirms 18-karat gold, while the diamond-shaped EJ maker’s mark identifies the workshop of Edmond Jaeger. His long-standing relationship with Cartier dates back to the early twentieth century and played an important role in the development of Cartier’s watchmaking. His collaboration with Jacques-David LeCoultre eventually led to the creation of Jaeger-LeCoultre in 1937.
A lovely piece of Cartier’s jewellery-watch heritage, retaining the details and character that make vintage cocktail watches so appealing. This one isn’t for someone who likes to follow the masses, but for someone who recognises what makes a watch special and appreciates its history and overall design.
