Cartier Tank Louis St. Petersburg Edition
During the 1990s, Cartier was continuing its global expansion. With new markets came new releases, celebrations, and creative inspiration. For the opening of its new boutique in Russia, Cartier looked back to the early 20th-century explorations of Louis Cartier. During his time in Russia, he was inspired by the interlocking patterns of Byzantine design. When inspiration was needed for a new collection, it was this trip that helped shape the jewellery and watches now known as the St. Petersburg Collection.
The Tank is one of the most iconic watch designs ever created. Originally conceived in 1917 by Louis Cartier, it would take almost a century for the inspiration gathered during this same period to be translated into a newer, more special edition of the watch: the Cartier Tank Louis St. Petersburg Edition.
While the original Tank is an icon that needs no change, Cartier created something more exclusive and sophisticated for those looking beyond the classic design. This Tank, fashioned in 18K yellow gold, is fitted with a beautiful and unique teardrop-like bracelet that captures the golden fluidity of jewellery in motion. The case is adorned with diamonds, as well as Byzantine-inspired gemstones set against the case: two princess-cut rubies, four princess-cut sapphires, and six round-cut topazes. In addition to the 54 smaller diamonds, the watch features a diamond-set crown, a detail reserved for Cartier’s most special pieces.
If the previously mentioned details were not enough, the watch also features a beautifully guilloché dial, in line with the other St. Petersburg Edition models. This specific example, however, is made even more special by its green enamel border around the dial, giving the watch an added sense of depth, rarity, and distinction.
This is where watchmaking meets jewellery in a way only Cartier can achieve. The St. Petersburg editions represent a moment in Cartier’s history where creativity, exclusivity, and luxury came together. Pieces like this were never about mass appeal. They were about craftsmanship, imagination, and offering something truly special to those looking beyond the obvious.
Today, that makes them incredibly rare and highly desirable among collectors. For the collector who wants to move differently, who values rarity over recognition and design over hype, this Cartier Tank Louis St. Petersburg Edition represents something truly exceptional.
