Piaget Protocole 'Pavée' Ref. 41545
The name Piaget has long been associated with elegance, creativity and an exceptional command of both watchmaking and jewellery. Often described as the “jeweller of watchmaking”, the Maison developed a distinctive vision in which a watch was not merely an instrument for telling time, but a precious object designed to decorate the wrist. This diamond-set Protocole is a perfect expression of that philosophy.
Rather than simply following the familiar architecture of the traditional rectangular watch, Piaget created its own interpretation. The Protocole’s geometric case is distinguished by its sharply cut corners, possibly recalling the octagonal outline of Paris’s Place Vendôme. Crafted in 18K yellow gold, its clean proportions provide the perfect frame for a dial completely pavé-set with diamonds.
There are no numerals and no conventional hour markers. Only two slender gold hands interrupt the surface of diamonds, allowing the watch to reveal the time discreetly beneath the brilliance of the stones. Combined with its rich burgundy leather strap, the diamonds almost appear to reflect shades of ruby as the watch moves in the light.
Between the late 1950s and the end of the 1970s, Piaget developed one of the most recognisable and creative styles in twentieth-century watchmaking. The Maison increasingly placed the dial at the centre of its designs, using ornamental stones, precious metals and diamonds to transform its watches into what were described at the time as “haute couture creations”. Despite its jewellery-like appearance, this Protocole remains a true mechanical watch, powered by Piaget’s compact manually wound calibre 4P.
At Roia Objects, we are particularly drawn to watches that balance discretion with extravagance. The Protocole 'Pavée' does exactly that. Its restrained dimensions make it surprisingly wearable, while its diamond-set dial ensures that it can never go unnoticed. Worn with evening attire or contrasted against a simple everyday outfit, it is more than merely a watch reserved for special occasions. It is a jewel for the wrist and an unmistakable expression of Piaget at its most creative.
