It’s always a pleasure to offer vintage watches, but we have to admit, finding pieces like this one feels different. There’s something special about rare ones, the kind of pieces you simply don’t come across very often.

This Rolex Lady-Datejust ref. 69178 is fitted with one of Rolex’s highly sought-after Burgundy Stella dials, finished in a deep, glossy red that changes beautifully with the light. The dial is particularly impressive in person, with an incredible depth and richness that simply cannot be replicated by a standard printed dial.

The name “Stella” comes from Stella S.A., a Geneva-based supplier of the specialist lacquers and pigments used for these dials. The dials were produced through a multilayer lacquer process, creating the distinctive high-gloss finish that has made them so collectible today. What makes this particular example especially interesting is the condition of the dial. The lacquer is clean and completely free of visible cracking or spidering. This is an important detail with Stella dials, as the lacquer can develop fine cracks over the decades, making truly clean examples considerably harder to find.

Don’t get us wrong, seeing a Stella dial is always something special, but finding one in this condition, with the lacquer still completely clean, makes it that much more special. Kind of nerdy, but yes, it’s true. For us, this is exactly what keeps our passion alive, finding gems.
